Beep Beep!

Before there was texting, before there was email—even before the telephone—there was the telegraph and Morse Code. Beep Beep! celebrates the early days of telecommunication with an ostinato that spells—you guessed it!—beep! (B – . . .  E .  E .  P . – – .) The piece avoids high 3rd fingers and cello extensions by utilizing Dorian and Mixolydian modes for its melodies.

I Wish I Were a Fish

Franz Schubert’s setting of Goethe’s poem “Ich wollt', ich wär' ein Fisch” is the basis for this contiguous suite featuring each section of your young orchestra. The cellos personify the dolphin with a graceful melody, while the violas get chromatic in their representation of the jellyfish. Feel the weight of your bass section as they embody the manatee and delight in the playfulness of your violins who stand in for the sea lions. A fun way to learn about theme and variations!

Waltz of the Two Left Feet

A waltz in 4/4 time? This off-kilter dance relies on silence and rhythmic displacement of the beat to give the impression of a waltz that just can’t seem to get moving. Scored for just one violin part, Waltz of the Two Left Feet is designed to work with a group that has balance issues. Inspired by the music of popular French film composer Yann Tiersen.
